TITCH TOUR 17-29 May 2018
GLORIOUS INDONESIA INCLUDING THE KELIMUTU CRATER LAKES
An experience you will not forget !!!
This tour combines visits to four lodges situated in unique ecological and cultural locations in the Indonesia archipelago using our local company trained or approved guides. The activities described here can be modified and tailor made according to your wishes. For example if you are a diver, you could spend more days in the Komodo National park on this activity; or a keen birder on that activity at all lodges. The main emphasis is on showing some of the wildlife and culture of this country through scenic and physical activities. There are some travel days but these are to be enjoyed as traveling in this country feels like one large family on the move. Through the experience you will see and meet many Indonesians, some of whom will become friends and most of whom will welcome you into their country. We hope our new lodge in the MBeliling Bird sanctuary will be open and time may be spent there, especially Day 4.
Day 01 : 17 May 2018 – Arrival at Udayana Kingfisher Eco Lodge.
Arriving at Ngurah Rai International airport in Bali, you are picked up by Alan Wilson or a senior member of the company who will transport you to Udayana Kingfisher Eco Lodge – welcome and briefing on the tour by one of our senior staff. Depending on arrival time, birders will be offered a bird walk either in the gardens of the Lodge where there are a number of walks or at the Nusa Dua Settling Ponds. This lodge is the oldest lodge, designed and built by Meryl Wilson in 1995. There will be a welcome dinner and briefing in the evening.
Day 02 : 18 May 2018 – Depart for Labuan Bajo.
KOMODO ISLANDS – A WORLD HERITAGE SITE. After an early breakfast, you will leave for the flight to Labuan Bajo where you will be met by Fitri Rodja and taken to the Bajo Komodo Eco Lodge arriving for lunch followed by a short siesta. This lodge was also designed and built by Meryl Wilson in 2002 and is considered locally an icon of the town. At around 1500 you will proceed on a snorkeling visit to one of the nearby islands to test your snorkeling equipment. Then back to the Lodge for dinner and briefing for the program of the next day.
Day 03 : 19 May 2018 – Komodo Island and The Komodo Dragon.
KOMODOS and SNORKELING After an early breakfast, you will proceed to the harbor for your boat to Komodo Island, the main and most beautiful island of the Komodo group of islands. We purposely choose a slow boat as it is very relaxing to move slowly through reefs of the Sea of Flores, past many islands and the large island of Rinca on your left arriving at around 0930 (depending on currents) passing the world famous Pink Beach on your way. You will be briefed by a park warden and then immediately proceed on a walk to look for Komodos and other animals; you should also see a number of bird species. Then lunch back on the boat and proceed for snorkeling on The Pink Beach. This is a fabulous place and is world renowned for its biodiversity; however the current can be strong and you must take local advice where to swim; then back to Labuan Bajo and dinner at the Lodge, meeting and briefing from our birding guide Sam Rabenak
Day 04 : 20 May 2018 – Birds of West Flores
The tours on May 11th will be divided into two and we need to know the numbers. Below is a general description of the two tours
- HOBBITS or Flores Man. There is an early start and this tour will be of interest to anthropologists and anyone interested in the work of the Leakeys in Africa.
Also it will show people the West Manggerai district of West Flores from the coast to the hills past MBeliling into up to the hill town of Ruteng.
It entails a 4 – 5 hours car trip in both directions will plenty of stops for coffee and photos.
On location, there will be a guide who will explain the history of what is known about “Flores Man” in a area where digging occurred. There will be a minimum of walking.
- Birding in MBeliling. This is also an early start and go first to the village of Melo (45 minutes to one hour drive) at the foot of Mt MBeliling.
Your guide (Sam Rabenak) will then take you on a bird walk into the forest and hills of the area.
At aroud midday you will drive to Lake Sano Nggoang- about an hour away, for a restful lunch.
After lunch, Sam will take you for a gentle walk birding around the lake; at dusk he will attempt to call owls in, afterward returning to the lodge for supper.
Day 05 : 21 May 2018 – Kelimutu Crater lakes Eco Lodge.
After an early breakfast, you will take a flight to Ende in the east of the island of Flores, where Patris, your guide will pick you up and will start your travel into the mountains to the lodge stopping briefly at a traditional village and a market. You will arrive at this beautiful lodge in a valley with a river flowing though under Mount Kelimutu for a late lunch and briefing on this part of the tour. After a siesta you are free to roam the lodge grounds and the valley either just walking or birding. You will see the rice fields near the lodge. This lodge has been designed and built by Meryl Wilson in two phases the first being 11 rooms finished in 2010 and a further 11 rooms finished in 2014. Its beautiful location has been praised by many.
Dinner and briefing from the guide.
Day 06 : 22 May 2018 – The fabulous crater lakes of changing colour at dawn.
THE LAKES OF CHANGING COLOUR and IKATS. One of the main aims of this tour is to see the Kelimutu Lakes at dawn, a magic experience. You start very early at 0400 and after a cup of tea or coffee, drive, with your guide, to the crater lakes (around 19km) through the base of the Kelimutu National Park. You then walk to the lakes through woodland where hopefully you will hear the beautiful song of The Bare Throated Whistler (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVY-C1UwlGs), arriving at the top just before dawn. See the sunrise, at the top site with a coffee, see the lakes (a magic moment) and just enjoy the whole scene and environment after walking to view all the three lakes. You then return via the park to hear and see the birds and return to the Lodge for a late “Pancake breakfast”. After breakfast, you are taken into the village of Moni to view the market and local products. After lunch and a short siesta, you are taken to see a local village where weavers prepare ikats (weavings) using centuries old techniques with pure colours; back to the lodge for dinner followed by a local dance group to show local song and dance – briefing for the next day program.
Day 07 : 23 May 2018 – Fly from Ende to Bali
After a leisurely breakfast, you will leave for Ende to catch the midday flight to Bali. En route there will be opportunities for photographs of the scenery if needed. In Bali you will be picked up by our drivers and taken back to Udayana Kingfisher Eco Lodge for an early dinner, briefing and rest. Also you can pick up any luggage or laundry left there for the next part of the trip. You can also leave laundry there.
Day 08 : 24 May 2018 – Borneo
KLOTOKS You will have a very early start early flight to Surabaya in Java and then Pangkalan Bun in Borneo arriving in around 1300. After meeting your guide, you will be transported to Kumai to your klotok (river boat) for lunch and start the magic trip up The Sekonyer river to The Rimba Orangutan Eco Lodge. On the way you should start seeing your first primates. If the plane is on time, you may be in time to see your first orangutans at the Tandjung Harapan feeding station. The on to the lodge, for a welcome drink and briefing by your guide followed by dinner.
Day 09 : 25 May 2017 – Camp Leakey
ORANGUTANS, PROBOSCIS MONKEYS and OTHER PRIMATES. For Birders, a pre breakfast Bird walk is suggested. Then, you take your river boat to famous Camp Leakey to view Orangutans in their natural habitat along the river or at Leakey; other primates seen will be Proboscis Monkeys, Gibbons and Long Tailed Macaques, Silverbacked Langurs and you will see many birds, crocodiles, pigs and monitors. Camp Leakey (named after the famous Oxford based scientist Louis Leakey), one of the homes of Professor Birute Galdikas (an investor of Ecolodgesindonesia). Camp Leakey is allegedly the longest biological, documented scientific experiment on the globe. Galdikas is one of Leakeys golden angels, the others being Dianne Fossey (Gorilla scientist – deceased) and Jane Goodall (the Chimpanzee scientist). If you are lucky, you may meet her. On the way home, if the evening is clear, you should have a great sunset with the Proboscis Monkeys and hopefully Horn bills. Without the hard and long term work of Birute Galdikas, we would not have Tandjung Puting National Park which would have been taken by illegal palm oil and other businesses. We and the world owe her and great debt.
Day 10 : 26 May 2017 – Camp Tanggui and Tandjung Harapan
BUTTERFLIES and VILLAGERS OF TANDJUNG HARAPAN. For Birders, again, early morning bird walk, breakfast and then a visit to Tanggui (a second Orangutan release centre) in an area famous for butterflies. After the viewing, you will proceed on a hike around the area suitable for those interested in birds, butterflies and trees. This is an opportunity to study the area in a relaxed fashion. You will have lunch back at the lodge and proceed to Tandjung Harapan (the third release centre) for the afternoon viewing. You will then return to the Lodge for a short rest and then proceed for an evening dinner on the river with the “fireflies”. The latter is a terrific experience.
Day 11 : 27 May 2017 – Fly from Borneo to Bali.
Enjoy breakfast at Rimba lodge before boarding our “klotok”. Take a leisurely boat ride before returning to Pankanlan Bun airport through the port city of Kumai. Revive all your senses and let them retain the magic of Tanjung Puting National Park. Listen to the sounds of Kumai all day loudspeakers emanating from tall buildings where swift nests are being commercially harvested. The swift saliva is used for bird’s nest soup and can reach 13 million Rupiah and up per Kg. Indonesia is the biggest supplier and the trade has led certain swift colonies to be critically threatened. Fly back to Bali.
In Bali, you will be met by our drivers and taken back to Udayana Kingfisher Eco Lodge for a relaxing dinner and a night swim at the pool.
Day 12 : 28 May 2018 – Bali Shopping and the Kecak dance
After a relaxing breakfast, a shopping trip will be offered to locations dependent on the shopping needs; luch and a siesta followed by an evening visit to the Uluwatu temple (one of the six major Bali temples) and a viewing the famous and very popular Monkey or Kecak dance. For those who have not seen this dance it is a must. The dance tells part of the Ramayana story through men’s voices with no music; the rhythm of the dance is almost African – a very exciting way to end your tour of Indonesia.
Day 13 : 29 May – Tour End
After a relaxing breakfast proceed to the airport. Guests are welcome to stay longer at the Lodge, proceed home or to other destinations.
