Canoeing on sungai Buluh Kecil (Little Buluh river)
Let us take you on a half or full day tour canoeing and hiking in the forest around the Rimba Orangutan Eco Lodge. The tour was pioneered by Ucok Hakim, Aris, Hadi and Alan Wilson. Leaving before dawn, you proceed in motorized canoes to the Liitle Buluh river, a tributary of the Sekonyer about 10 minutes from the lodge and enter a magical world into the forest for an hour where you have breakfast. You then proceed either for a half day of full day hike in this lowland forest. In a half day tour, we saw or heard 24 bird species (listed below). We saw only a few other animals as listed. However, this is a great tour for keen birders.

Scaly crowned Babbler, Chestnut winged Babbler, Red crowned Barbet, Blue throated Bee eater, Olive winged Bulbul, Slender billed Crow, Greater Racket tailed Drongo, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Malaysian Blue Flycatcher, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Bushy crested Hornbill, Black Hornbill, Black naped Monarch, Rufous Piculet, Purple throated Sunbird, Scarlet rumped Trogon and the Rufous tailed Tailor bird (17)
Black caped Babbler, Horsfield’s Babbler, Blue eared Barbet, Scarlet breasted Flowerpecker, Rhinoceros Hornbill, White rumped Shama, Hill Myna (7)
OTHER ANIMALS SEEN
were a Giant squirrel, a Ground Shrew, a Yellow Muntjak and
an unidentified Squirrel. Primates were heard but not seen.

Ucok Hakim was born in Kumai, Central Kalimantan (Borneo) and was educated in Pangkalan Bun where attended primary and secondary school. In his spare time, he studied and qualified in Accountancy. He joined Ecolodges Indonesia in 2006 as restaurant staff but worked his way up and is now Assistant Manager. During this process, he came to love and study the wildlife in The Tandjung Puting National park and soon became an expert guide. Now Ucok or Hakim is a member of The Guides Association and well known throughout the world (see Reports on Trip Advisor and other websites) through the groups has guided and helped through Ecosafari Indonesia. He is the Head of our Guides at The Rimba Lodge and is used extensively by primate and birding groups.
